Geopolitical Analysis of International Relations

11- 16 July 2011

The objective of the course is to introduce the basic concepts of geopolitical analysis. The course will adopt a multidisciplinary approach that incorporates strategic, geographic, historic, cultural and economic dimensions in order to facilitate a more profound understanding of contemporary international relations.  The central themes will include the concepts and methodology of geopolitical analysis, geopolitical schools of thought, identity factors and geopolitical representation, as well as an application of geostrategy and geo-economics. Case studies will be presented on the various geopolitical configurations that significantly impact the current world system. Conferences will be held by leading international experts.

 

Target group of participants: Persons working for International Organisations and Government Agencies, Diplomats, University Students, Company Managers and other interested individuals.

Dates: Program starts on Monday 11 July and ends on Saturday 16 July 2011.


Duration of the programme: 40 hours.

 
Place: Domaine de Penthes, 18, Chemin de l’Impératrice, Geneva, Switzerland.

Participation fee: 1800 CHF (900 CHF for students). This fee does not cover travel, accommodation, meals and health insurance fees.

Modules can be arranged if someone can not attend the whole program. 

A certificate of participation will be awarded by ICGS upon completion of the course.

Lecturers:

 

 

David Criekemans, Belgium, holds a PhD on Geopolitical Schools of Thought and Master-degrees in Political and Social Sciences (International Politics) from the University of Antwerp, and European Master of Public Administration from the Catholic University of Leuven, Belgium. Currently, he is a Postdoctoral Researcher in International Politics at the University of Antwerp (Belgium), a Senior Researcher at the Flemish Centre for International Policy & a Lecturer in Geopolitics at the Royal Military Academy in Brussels. He is also a lecturer and scientific advisor of ICGS. Main specialities: geopolitical schools of thought and geopolitics of energy. Most recent publication: [Transl.] “Geopolitics, ‘Geographic Consciousness’ of Foreign Policy?”, Publishing House Garant / Maklu (Antwerp), an in-depth study of the history of geopolitical thought from 1890 till present. 

 

Gyula Csurgai, Switzerland / Hungary, holds a Doctorate from the University of Geneva; Degree in Political Science from the University of Concordia (Canada) and the University of Toulouse (France); Postgraduate in European Studies from the European Institute at University of Geneva; Founding Member and Director of the International Centre for Geopolitical Studies (ICGS), Geneva. Mr. Csurgai teaches Geopolitics, Geoeconomics and Competitive Intelligence at ICGS and is also a University Professor. Nidal Salim, is a Palestinian citizen living in Geneva. He obtained his undergraduate degree from Damascus University in applied geophysics, his Masters degree in Groundwater Hydrology, from UNESCO-IHE, Delft, The Netherlands and a doctorate in the Application of Remote Sensing and GIS in the water cycle from the University of Geneva. In 2007 Nidal SALIM founded the Global Institute for Water Environment and Health. Nidal SALIM was involved in collaborations with different research institutes, universities and International Organizations, such as the Middle East Peace Process/Water Working Group/EXACT, the World Health Organization (WHO), World Meteorological Organization (WMO) and United Nation Environmental Program (UNEP) He was director at the Palestinian Water Authority (PWA), which involved many separate hydrological projects at local and regional scales. Nidal has an extensive bibliography of publications and participates actively in international conferences and workshops.

 

Alexandre Vautravers,  Switzerland,  Doctorate in Social, Economic Sciences and History from the Geneva University and the University of Lyon 2, France. Mr. Vautravers is an expert on global arms development and trade, consultant for several Swiss media, scientific Director of Hepta aero. He leads research teams for the Swiss Academy of Science and Technology and the Swiss Military History Commission. He is also the Chief editor of the Swiss Military Review (RMS); and collaborator of ICGS. Recent publications: [Transl.] “Swiss Air Force 90 years”, “Armament”, “The Future of War”. “Security Forum” 2009, Webster University, Geneva.  Dr. Vautravers has taught international relations and strategy at various universities in Switzerland. Currently he is Professor and head of the Department of International Relations at Webster University, Geneva.

 

Bernard Wicht, Switzerland, holds a BA and a PhD in Law from the University of Fribourg, Switzerland.  He was an expert appointed to the European Commission and President of the Culture Committee, Council of Europe.  Mr. Wicht is currently Head of International Affairs of the Swiss Conference of the Heads of Cantonal Public Education. He is Professor of strategic studies at Lausanne University's Institute of Political and International Studies. Recent publications: “Guerre et Hégémonie”, [Transl.] “War and Hegemony”; [Transl.] “The Art of War in the XXI Century”, “Failed States and Failure of States: The Strategic Dimension of Resource Rivalries.” 

 

Anselm Zurfluh,   Switzerland, graduated from the University of Nice, he holds two doctorates:  one in history on “Historical demography and mentalities”; and the second one in ethnology. Specialized in Demography, Geopolitics, Anthropology, History of European Culture and Civilisation, he worked as Professor at the Stiftsschule Einsiedeln (1981-1989), researcher, editor and publisher. He was also adviser in Educational Affairs at the Academy of Nice, and researcher at the Université d’Avignon .  Since 2001 he is Director of the Institute and Museum of The Swiss Abroad in Geneva and teaches at the Geneva School of Diplomacy on “Demography and Democracy” and “The Power of Small States”. He is author, editor and coordinator of several books and scientific publications in German, French and Italian.

Our courses are characterised by a non conformist approach and interactive teaching. Discussions are enhanced by the diversity of participants coming from different cultures, countries as well as having different educational and professional backgrounds.
