The Centre's Objectives

Founded in June 2001, the International Centre for Geopolitical Studies (I.C.G.S.) has the objective of reinforcing international stability and security through the promotion of a better understanding of the causes of conflicts and tensions. As such, the I.C.G.S. engages in analyses and studies of world geopolitical issues in order to facilitate a more complex reading of the evolutions taking place in contemporary international relations.

The Context

Since the end of the cold war, international relations have been characterized by an increasing complexity. The difficulty of apprehending the epoch in which we live is due, among other factors, to the increased number of actors, the complexity of our times, technological advances, geoeconomic rivalries, ethnic conflict and the tensions caused by the contradictory processes of globalisation. The fact that modern conflicts have numerous causes requires the adoption of new methods of analysing contemporary international relations. The geopolitical approach is a response to this necessity, since it takes into account the strategic, historical, geographical, cultural and economic spheres in deciphering the complexity of current and future conflicts.

By What Means?

The I.C.G.S. has the objective of reinforcing international stability and security through the promotion of a better understanding of the causes of current conflicts and tensions. To achieve its objective, the Centre: organizes courses, conferences, debates and seminars on geopolitics; undertakes geopolitical research; provides geopolitical expertise in the form of reports or analyses; and publishes academic and research work in the field of geopolitics.

The Centre's Network

In order to favour dialogue and the exchange of ideas, the I.C.G.S. maintains contact, and is further developing relations with, other organizations in Switzerland and internationally, including other geopolitical institutes, academic circles, international organisations, civil society and the media.

Where To Find Us ?

The head office of the I.C.G.S. is located in Geneva . Its multicultural character and importance on the international scene make Geneva a privileged place to establish and maintain contacts with international organizations, academic circles and civil society.

The I.C.G.S. aims to contribute to this creative environment by promoting collaboration and dialogue at the international level on complex topics such as the geopolitical stakes and challenges faced in the international relations of the world of today.

Statutes

The I.C.G.S. is a non-profit organization that is governed by its own statutes and by the Swiss Civil Code articles 60 and following. The Centre is registered with the Swiss Commercial Register. It is entirely independent of political, ideological and economic organisations. The Centre has been established on a permanent basis.

Financial Resources

The resources of the I.C.G.S. are to a great extent constituted by the revenues obtained from the activities of the Centre, donations, legacies and subsidies, and the proceeds from sales of I.C.G.S. publications. Revenues are also earned through the provision of consultancy, expertise and analyses, and geopolitics courses held under the auspices of the Centre.
